LPW Current News / Information Letter ¹ 1 (35)25.01.2011 In this Issue: Accomplished Non-profit LPW Projects in 2010 and LPW Plans for 2011 The Project was supported by Canada Fund of Local Initiatives, the Canadian Embassy in Ukraine and by Kyiv Regional Council. The Project was aimed at formation of pilot model of measures to overcome social isolation of pensionable age people, in particular, women. Project duration: February-April 2010 in Kyiv city, Bila Tserkva and Brovary towns (Kyiv region). Target group - preretirement/pensionable age people - women (+/55) and men (+/60), present or former civil servants, researchers, teachers, scientists, social, medical, administrative workers, etc. The pilot Project’s main stages:
Under analytical component of the Project popular science book: "Social Capital: Social and Professional Networks in Ukraine" was prepared and published. The book was written by Dr. Olena Lazorenko, Kyiv, Publishing House "Energiya", 2010- 104 p. Publication might be of interest to readers keen on social capital concept, formation of confidence in society and its institutions. That is an additional information source how to set up and to develop social and professional networks and to support basic values. This brochure would be useful for NGO leaders, scientists, teachers, consultants, managers of public organisations and international institutions working in public, social, economic or ecological areas. The LPW has initiated the Project "Life Story Journal", and one of its components was realised within the LPW Annual Conference conducted on 16 September 2010 in Kyiv, under support of dvv international Ukraine and U-Media Project Ukraine (Internews Network). Olena Lazorenko, event moderator, said: "We focused this conference on professional, gender and ethnic diversity. As a result, we have invited three men and three women, high professionals in international relations, media and public areas, from Ukraine, Norway, USA and Germany. They are self-made personalities who became the heroes of our journal". The presenters were selected to create professional, gender and ethnic diversity Life Story Journal. Among speakers are: Ms. Ricarda Rieger, Country Director, UNDP Ukraine (Germany); Mr. Olav Berstad, Royal Norwegian Ambassador to Ukraine (Norway); Ms. Sue Folger, Regional Manager NIS, COP U-Media Ukraine, Internews Network (USA); Mr. Vasyl Zorya, Chief Editor, "Narodny Deputat"/ "People Deputy" Magazine (Ukraine); Ms. Olena Velychko, Head of Department, State Security and Stock Market Commission of Ukraine (Ukraine) and Olexiy Miroshnichenko, Executive Vice-President of Confederation of Employers of Ukraine (Ukraine).
Real life stories of presenters became LPW contribution into the National Week of Adult Education in Ukraine. After the conference, within the framework of this Project, "Life Story Journal" publication (LPW Annual Meeting 2010 Report) was prepared and disseminated. After "Life Story Journal" conference conducted on 16 September 2010 the League continued its activities in the field of adult education (AE). In particular, in October-December 2010 the League conducted market survey of AE services providers in two pilot regions (Lviv and Poltava) to identify educational needs of socially-unprotected groups of adults. On 2 December 2010, the first informal National work group meeting on development the concept of lifelong adult education with focus on informal/adult education was conducted. 13 participants from educational and scientific spheres, public organisations, employers, German and US foundations working in the field of AE took part in business lunch. The event was organised by LPW within the AE Project under financial support of DVV International Ukraine. On 3 December, LPW President Olena Lazorenko had a meeting with Mr. Yevgen Sulyma, Deputy Ministry, Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, to inform the Ministry about the new initiative and cooperation in the area of AE. As was recommended by the work group, a separate AE webpage was created at LPW site: http://lpw.org.ua/en/adult_education/ (in English) and http://lpw.org.ua/ua/adult_education/ (in Ukrainian). Organisations who want to join the National work group http://lpw.org.ua/ua/adult_education/national_group/ are welcome to send a short motivation letter at lpw_network@i.ua, with information about organisation, experience in AE during last two years and contact details of work group participant. On 20-22 March, LPW President took part in "Women in Development Europe"/ WIDE Capacity Building Conference in Prague: "Gender Equality, Trade and Development: An Introduction to EU Trade and Development Policies and its Implications for Gender Equality at the Beginning of 2010". One of the results of participation in this Conference was proposition for LPW to become WIDE’s platform in Ukraine. On 6 April, LPW President took part in the seminar on labour safety in Ukraine conducted in the UN Representative Office in Kyiv. The seminar was initiated by UN Global Agreement labour relations work group (LPW is one of members of UN Global Agreement). See more at http://lpw.org.ua/ua/news/?pid=589 On 2-5 May, LPW Board Member Nataliya Martynenko, on behalf of the League, took part in "Gender Diversity Management in Europe 2010" Workshop, conducted in Berlin, Germany, under support of Gunda Werner Institute of Feminism and Gender Democracy, Henrich Boell Foundation. This is training series for gender diversity experts 2010 - 2012. The programme included acquaintance with gender diversity best practices at the levels of local Government of Berlin city, political foundations of the country and in Europe. LPW members have been invited twice to this training programme. Please follow the LPW announcements about future calls and competitions. On 15-16 June, LPW members and LPW partners from Chernigiv and Kharkiv cities took part in international Conference: "Social Advertising", organised in Kyiv. http://www.etouches.com/social_ad On 22 June, LPW President took part in international Conference: "Ukrainian Women Movement: Myth Or Reality?..", organised by Ukrainian Women Fund in Kyiv. http://www.uwf.kiev.ua/ On 6-9 October, LPW members made presentations during educational training events in Lviv city. The working visit to Lviv was supported by DVV International Ukraine. Photos and analytical report were circulated among LPW network members and consultants. On 24-29 November, LPW representatives took part in international conference of the European Association for the Education of Adults (ÅÀÅÀ) and conducted working meeting with EUROCHAMBRES - the European Association of Chambers of Commerce and Industry. The event was supported by DVV International Ukraine. On 6-9 December, Valentyna Legka, LPW Revision Committee Head and Nataliya Martynenko, LPW Board Member, participated in CIPE (Center of International Private Entrepreneurship) training programme: "Management of Non-governmental Organisations" - in its first of three training modules "Capacity Development of Business Associations". CIPE opened its Representative Office in Ukraine to work out capacity development programme for Ukrainian business associations. 38 participants from regions of Ukraine took part in the programme. The first module included the following topics: strategic aspects of planning, budgeting, membership, services, financial sources, and basic communications. The League made presentation "Membership in Business Associations. How to Attract and How to Save?" In 18 January 2011, Olena Lazorenko, LPW President and Valentyna Legka, LPW Revision Committee Head, took part in public discussion in Kyiv: "Financial Crisis and Anti-crisis Measures in Ukraine: Gender Dimension", organised by Representative Office of Henrich Boell Foundation in Ukraine. Together with Polish experts the impact of financial and economic crisis was discussed during the event and analytical report was presented. Conclusion of the discussion is the following: gender inequality in economic and social spheres in Ukraine increased during 2008-2010, feminisation of poverty, domestic violence because of men unemployment are observed - that are the consequences of crisis and anti-crisis measures. In 10 February 2011, Olena Lazorenko, LPW President and Oksana Panchuk, LPW Consultant, took part in the LPW presentation and assessment of potential of the Business Support Organization`s session conducted by East Alliance project staff and SEQUD in Kyiv. East Alliance is lead by EUROCHAMBERS (Brussels) and co-finance by European Commission. LPW is official partner in the East Alliance from Ukraine.
